Singleton Fiber Processing Mill – Maryland’s only commercial fiber mill opened at 580 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland. The Mill has two primary customers: sheep farmers specializing in wool sheep with high grade wool – who process their wool into a value-added roving; and fiber artists who hand-spin roving into yarn for wool products, such as sweaters, socks, mittens, etc.
Singleton takes the fleece through all processing stages: skirting the fleece (prefer customers bring in very clean fleeces); scouring (washing); drying fleece on racks; the combing picker (separates, conditions, moisturizes the fiber); and carding – resulting in a roving fiber to a customer’s specifications. The carding machine is shown in the photo.
Singleton will be at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, May 2-3, 2015.
Mill is unique – no minimum runs, and a fast turnaround time. Go to the “Photo” section of the website. The steps in processing wool into a finished product are shown.
