Decorated Lamb Contest & Shepherds Lead Contest - 2008 Frederick County Fair

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

This is a fun event at the Frederick County Fair, held Wednesday evening, 6:00 pm, Sept. 17th. Thanks to Robin Haines (Thistle Down Farm) for all her work in organizing these two events.

4-H'ers in this Decorated Lamb photo are: Drew Ridgeway, Lauren Shur, and Olivia Dutton. Go to "Photos", page 4, for additional photos of 4-H'ers in these two contests.

The goal is to make these two contests successful for each participating 4-H'er, and to provide a fun culminating event for the kids after a long hard week of competitive showing of their animals. This year each participant received prize money, ride tickets, nylon sheep halters, and the winners received trophies.

The Shepherd's Lead Contest consists of the 4-H'er wearing a garment constructed of at least 60% wool, cleaning and clipping their sheep, writing a script describing their outfit and animal, and their presentation together in the show ring.

The Decorated Lamb Contest consists of the 4-H'er dressing up themselves (usually in a costume) and their animal, writing a script, and their presentation together in the show ring. Often the harder the judges laugh, the higher the score!
